An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a European Union identification number. It is used by customs authorities when exchanging information between themselves and government departments or agencies.
The purpose of aest-n EORI number is for statistics, fiscal declarations and security.
All businesses undertaking the import/export of goods into/out of the EU need to obtain an EORI before commencing customs activities in the EU.
An economic operator established outside the EU needs to be assigned an EORI number if it intends to lodge a customs declaration, an Entry or an Exit Summary Declaration. Authorized economic operators in particular need to have an EORI number.
Without an EORI, your goods can’t be cleared through customs. This means that you can’t get them in or out. If they're stuck at customs, authorities will accrue storage fees ("demurrage") at the border, port or airport.
If your business is registered in the EU, your EORI number will be an extension of your VAT number or registration number (its structure depends on the country you're based in).
